5 Not-So-Scary Ingredients
Polysorbate, maltodextrin, and sodium hydroxide...oh my!
These ingredients sound like part of an ooky, spooky concoction. But with a dash of science and pinch of transparency, you’ll see they’re not so scary, after all…
Here are 5 ingredients that shouldn’t spook you.
Polysorbate 80
Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier that allows oil and water ingredients to mix. It’s essential to producing a smooth, silky end product. The compound is composed of sorbitol, ethylene oxide, and oleic acid. Sorbitol naturally occurs in berries and fruit, ethylene oxide is a natural gas extracted from minerals, and oleic acid is found in olive oil and other common cooking oils. A super natural ingredient, if you will.
Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide occurs naturally in various minerals. It is used as a colorant in cosmetics, food, and other products to produce a boo-tiful, opaque white. Our titanium dioxide is NOT processed into nanoparticles, so it is safe for use.
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
Sodium cocoyl isethionate makes your cauldron (or tub) bubble! A fatty acid derived from coconut oil, this gentle surfactant creates foam and froth. One end of the molecule is attracted to dirt and oil while the other is attracted to water. This ensures grime washes down the drain, leaving you squeaky clean.
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is a food starch made from corn, rice, potato or wheat. Commonly found in food, cosmetics, and personal care products, this compound binds ingredients and provides additional moisturization.
Sodium Hydroxide
Also known as caustic soda or lye, this compound is highly corrosive and should be used with caution. A key ingredient in soap making, sodium hydroxide reacts with fatty acids in vegetable oils to create fatty acid salts (soap) and glycerin. We carefully calculate the amount of lye in each batch to ensure none remains in the final product.
